As part of the New International Financial and Economic Architecture (NIFEA) initiative, Council for World Mission (CWM) and several ecumenical partners will be hosting a webinar on 22 April Thursday, 17:00-18:30 Central European Summer Time (CEST), highlighting the voices of Indigenous Peoples and their understanding of the Economy of Life.

Jointly organised with the World Council of Churches (WCC), World Communion of Reformed Churches (WCC), Lutheran World Federation (LWF), and World Methodist Council, the virtual event is held in conjunction with the Twentieth Session of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII) themed “Peace, justice and strong institutions: the role of Indigenous peoples in implementing Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 16”.

Responding to the societal ills that manifested during the COVID-19 pandemic, these faith-based organisations behind the NIFEA initiative recognised that indigenous people bear the brunt of oppressive economic systems and must be part of the process of re-defining justice, wellbeing, and promoting socio-economic transformation.

The webinar explores how capitalism, colonialism and Christianity have contributed to the marginalisation of indigenous communities. Panelists will share their community understanding of equality, land and spirituality, and Indigenous perspectives on and contributions to building an Economy of Life, focusing on concepts of reparation and restoration.
