International scholars and theologians will speak on the topic “White Privilege in COVID-19 and White Supremacy in Mission” in the first of a series of webinars starting on Monday 19 October, 10.00 to 11.30 (CEST), via live-stream at www.oikoumene.org/live. To further the work of overcoming racism, two overarching themes have been identified as key areas for ongoing theological reflection – hate speech, and whiteness, and speakers will be presenting papers on these two issues.
Organised by the World Council of Churches (WCC)’s Theological Study Group of the Pilgrimage of Justice and Peace, the webinars are a follow-up to the Tokyo theological forum on racism, and its manifestations and complexities last year.
The webinar series also aims to strengthen ecumenical theological reflection, accompaniment and advocacy in the area of racial justice, and speakers for the first webinar include ecumenical partners such as Council for World Mission (CWM) and World Communion of Reformed Churches (WCRC).
With the added experience of the COVID-19 pandemic, they will also give theological consideration how racism is manifested in certain groups. For example, indigenous peoples, blacks, other ethnic minorities, and migrants are targeted groups and their situations are made worse by both COVID-19 and structural racism.
