About Us
We are a worldwide partnership of 32 church denominations with a combined population of about 22 million Christians in over 50,000 congregations spread across 40 countries around the world.
Our purpose is to “to further the work of Christian mission throughout the world”. We believe that mission begins with God and that we are partners with God in mission. We believe that mission is a task of the whole church and not just of interested individuals. We believe that context matters. We also strongly believe in working in partnerships with others. Therefore, our engagement with God’s mission is intentionally member-focused, uncompromisingly contextual and strategically ecumenical.
Our story
Although CWM is just over 40 years old, it is built on a long history of mission.
CWM was created in 1977 and incorporates the London Missionary Society (1795), the Commonwealth Missionary Society (1836) and the (English) Presbyterian Board of Missions (1847). It owes a great deal to its forerunners in mission – including David Livingstone, John Williams and Robert Moffat – for sharing the word of God and Christianity across the globe from as far back as 1795. The Council for World Mission was set up to embrace more churches across the globe and widen its scope for mission by putting mutuality of partnership at the heart of its mission practice.
What We Do
Our work follows a thematic that is fully integrated into all aspects of the social fabric and consistent with our vision, mission, values and priorities. While CWM programme is not intended to prescribe the mission agenda of our member churches, we hope that they would influence the way members interpret their context and develop their programme towards becoming even more missional, and participating in building life-affirming communities.
